Q :

How does acupuncture work?

A :

Traditional Eastern Medicine explains that health is the result of a harmonious balance of the complementary extremes of yin and yang of the life force known as Qi or Chi. Qi is said to flow through meridians in the human body. Through approximately over a thousand acupuncture points in the body, these meridians and energy flows may be accessed to influence the body’s energy flow. Illness is said to be the consequence of an imbalance of the forces. If needles are inserted into these points with appropriate combinations it is said that the energy flow can be brought back into proper balance. In Western societies and several other parts of the world, acupuncture is explained including concepts of neuroscience. Acupuncture points are seen by Western practitioners as places where nerves, muscles and connective tissue can be stimulated. Acupuncture practitioners say that the stimulation increases bloodflow while at the same time triggering the activity of our own body's natural painkillers.

Q :

Is Acupuncture painful ? and What should I expect to feel from the needling ?

Needle size and insertion depth depend upon the nature of the problem. Depths can be from 0.2 to 3 inches with fine 0.16 mm (0.006 in) to 0.46 mm (0.018 in) diameters/ 0.5 to 3 in needles. It is almost painless as the needles are being inserted. At times, short lingering sensation, such as dull, tingling or heavy, could be felt.

Q :

What health benefits can I expect to be achieved?

A :

Scientific research has discovered that acupuncture points show a variety of unique bioelectric properties. Stimulation of acupuncture points cause definite physiological reactions affecting brain activity, such as releasing pain-killing endorphins, influencing blood pressure, enhancing the immune system, balancing the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems and enhancing the endocrine system. Most of all, acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural ability to heal itself, regain homeostasis.
